I agree that it does give voters a choice, but it a choice that I think will excite only the most die-hard political junkies. In practice I doubt many would decide to rank the 70 or so candidates that will be running in each electorate. In ...Australia the rate of voting below the line is about 3% (http://www.aph.gov.au/House/committee/em/elect07/report3/Final.pdf - look at page 6 to see the stats). There is some in-fighting in most parties, but i doubt many outside the party would care or have the knowledge to individually rank everyone.
Even if a lot of people utilised the option to vote below the line, I don't know if they will have that much more of a choice than they get currently. Labour will still go through the same processes to selec...

last week went well. the australian QC for Vector died on his feet. had absolutely no idea what he was talking about and the poor solicitors that have been working on the case for years were pulling their hair out.
Powerco were a little better but folded early once the laymemebers and judge started asking questions
we did quite well (we think) and the questions being asked of the Commerce Commission by the judge and lay members are all from our perspective (so far)

Mr Peters represents everything wrong with our politicians and MMP.
