On Tuesday, stuff.co.nz reported:
Well done everybody who was driving responsibly during the Easter weekend.
No road deaths were reported over the Easter break for the first time since records started, police say.
Acting national road policing manager Rob Morgan said that even more pleasing was that no road deaths had been reported for April so far.
That followed a grim 24-hour period at the end of March, when nine people died on the roads.
Morgan said advice from police was that overall, driving behaviour had been good during the Easter break.
Police attended 519 crashes during the period from 4pm Thursday to 6am today, 12 per cent lower than the 590 in the 2011 Easter break.
There was no one reason for the zero toll this Easter, and good fortune may have played a part.
Well done everybody who was driving responsibly during the Easter weekend.
