Jonathan Coleman – Asshole of the Week

We all know that the National party prescribes to the ethos that doing less is more. They’re unfortunately stuck in a quagmire of neoliberal dogma that is ensuring increased social dysfunction.

Clearly inequality is directly related to the population’s health and wellbeing, so it’s little wonder that New Zealand’s mental health statistics are worsening.

Don’t confront those who’ve caused this increase in societal harm though. Providing information about the stark realities of National’s anti-New Zealand agenda is a good way to get harassed by a minister who’s legally protected by parliamentary privilege.

On Tuesday, the current Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman went on the attack and tried to discredit an organisation called Action Station who are the authors of a report that details what’s going wrong with the mental health system.

With an attitude like Jonathan Coleman's you can really see why there’s little cross party cooperation going on. Coleman has simply dismissed the report outright and the five hundred submitters to it because he believes it's all somehow a big left wing conspiracy. What a complete moron!

Yesterday, Marianne Elliott on the Spinoff skilfully rebutted Coleman’s accusations:

Not ‘anti-Government’ but ‘pro-democracy’

Coleman accused ActionStation of being a group of “anti-government protesters”, and implied that the fact we campaign on a wide range of issues is the problem. Because the only appropriate way to engage in human rights and environmental advocacy is by choosing one issue and sticking with it?

We’re guided by the priorities of our community members, and people don’t exist in silos. Many of the people who want better mental health services in New Zealand are the same people who want to make sure that their KiwiSaver funds are not invested in cluster munitions or land mines. Go figure.

Nope, we’re not anti-government, even when our members think the government could be doing better, or more. But we are pro-democracy, and we think in healthy democracies there is space for debate, critique and, yes, protest. Although protest isn’t a tactic our community employs often. Generally we prefer to start, at least, by using the pathways built into our democratic processes, like making submissions to select committees and presenting petitions to MPs.

It’s unfortunate that things like incarceration and suicide rates have also increased markedly under a National government. Both of these are directly linked to mental health services or the lack thereof.

Sadly prisons are being used as a proxy for our closed mental health institutions and a lack of frontline services, which is giving rise to headlines like this:

Prisoner at risk of self-harm tied down for 37 consecutive nights, investigation finds

The use of restraints on mentally ill prisoners amounts to torture and undermines New Zealand's status as a civilised country, a leading lawyer says.

Nigel Hampton, QC, said a damning investigation into tie-down beds and waist restraints in jails showed the Corrections Department did not appear to have learned from previous inquiries into the care of severely ill people behind bars.

"It's inhumane and it's small wonder that it can be described as torture," he said.

National’s lack of any proper planning and policy implementation concerning our mental health services is a travesty that should not be so easily dismissed by an old throwback like Jonathan Coleman.

Providing a small amount of funding increase in election year (funding that was previously cut) isn’t a long-term solution to New Zealand’s societal problems. The dysfunction of National’s penny pinching and cuts to frontline services will cost the government and tax payers much more in the long run.

Jonathan Coleman’s arrogance and outright dismissal of Action Station’s unbiased report on mental health services clearly shows that he’s part of the problem and not part of the solution. The right wings blinkered view and head in the sand attitude is why Coleman wins this weeks Asshole award. What a prized prick!

The High Court has become a Circus

You would think that the High Court would be a place of serious consideration that should be respected by applicants, respondents judges and lawyers alike. Unfortunately that’s no longer the case in New Zealand:

Today, Stuff reported:

Colin Craig defends infamous sauna interview

Colin Craig has defended a controversial "sauna interview" with former TV3 journalist David Farrier, telling a court he thought viewers would find it entertaining.

In the 2015 interview, played in the Auckland High Court on Thursday, the increasingly sweaty duo sat in a hot sauna and discussed a range of topics, including the moon landing and junk food.

Farrier gradually stripped off items of clothing before he and Craig showered together.

How the fuck is this bullshit even relevant to the claims of defamation?

Yesterday, Stuff also reported from the High Court about a poem Colon Craig had written to his former press secretary Rachel MacGregor:

New love poem by Colin Craig revealed

"You are beautiful because your eyes are lovely," is the opening line of the poem, titled Beautiful.

"You are beautiful because you look unbelievably good in your new dress," it continues.

"You are beautiful because your lips are so amazing to kiss,

"You are beautiful because you are fearfully and wonderfully made,

"You are beautiful because your skin is so soft,

"You are beautiful because you have the most perfect... (LOL .. OK I deleted a couple of lines and stopped this section),

"Please know you are beautiful," it finishes.

Well thank god Colon’s tawdry little vignettes about sexual harassment finished there. It almost made me puke.

But if that wasn't enough of a High Court farce over the last few days...

On Tuesday, The NZ Herald reported:

National Party's Eminem rap battle has reached John Oliver

John Oliver says watching footage of Eminem's court battle against New Zealand's National Party is "everything I need right now".

The news comedian opened the latest episode of his hit HBO show Last Week Tonight by addressing the court battle playing out in the High Court in Wellington.

Lawyers are arguing whether a rip-off of Eminem's Lose Yourself was used for a National Party campaign ad in the 2014 general election.

Oliver quickly found the funny side.

It would be funny if these clowns weren’t wasting precious court time and resources that could be better spent on more worthwhile endeavours. If you think about these ridiculous cases they’re tragic to the point of absurdity! Why on earth the High Court has allowed such spectacles to progress this far is beyond me. Perhaps they simply don’t want the publics respect anymore?

It is unfortunate that the High Court of New Zealand has turned into a circus full of self-important clowns and posturing buffoons! The court system is clearly a bad joke and being abused by right wing sycophants searching for relevance all the while being aided and abetted by unscrupulous lawyers hungry for their cash.

In a country with one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, one would think that the High Court would have better things to do than pander to the whims of sexist defamers and copyright infringers.

The stench surrounding William Yan

Today, the NZ Herald reported:

Controversial citizen William Yan AKA Bill Liu admits money laundering of 'significant sums'

KEY POINTS

William Yan pleads guilty to money laundering, name suppression lifted.
Will serve sentence in penthouse apartment.
NZ to keep $15m of seized $43m.
One of New Zealand's most controversial citizens has been convicted of money laundering.

William Yan - also known as Bill Liu, Yang Liu and Yong Ming Yan - pleaded guilty to the serious criminal charge in March. Name suppression was lifted at the sentencing hearing in the Auckland District Court this morning.

It beggars belief that William Yan is being allowed to remain in New Zealand. It was bad enough that Shane Jones granted him citizenship in the first place despite an Interpol warning. But why on earth hasn’t Yan’s money laundering guilty verdict automatically sent him packing?

Clearly Yan laundered money from China because he couldn’t bring it into New Zealand legitimately.  But what really pisses me off is that it appears some of that fraudulent money was also used to grease the palms of certain dishonest politicians to ensure his citizenship.

It’s simply unacceptable that Yan was laundering money and applying for New Zealand citizenship while making substantial donations to the Labour and National party.

Today the Herald also reported:

Accused of $129m fraud: Citizen William Yan, the man with many names

Millionaire businessman William Yan (aka Yang Liu, Yong Ming Yan and Bill Liu) was at the centre of a political citizenship storm and a police raid on his Auckland apartment. Now Chinese authorities claim he is responsible for a $129 million fraud.

Surely crimes concerning such a large amount of dirty money would negate any rights Yan has to remain in New Zealand?

The fact that Yan has used some of his laundered money to apparently bribe officials in order to remain in New Zealand and retain his possessions, possessions that were also purchased with dirty money from China is despicable!

You can understand Yan being able to bribe his way out of China the first time, because their system is well known to be corruptible. But I expected more from New Zealand’s so called political leaders and our justice system.

Jared Savage from the Herald continues:

The Criminal Proceeds Recovery law used to seize assets from Mr Yan and Ms Zeng essentially forces someone to prove how an asset was paid for - even if they were acquitted or criminal charges are not laid.

This investigation focused on a number of VIP members at SkyCity casino and the flow of money related to alleged drug transactions through the casino, according to the affidavit of Mr Good.

"From my experience and from numerous intelligence reports and organised crime investigations, Sky City casino and particularly the VIP facilities are a recognised money laundering risk and an environment within which numerous drug distribution groups work, both alone, and alongside one another," said Mr Good.
SkyCity casino

One of the alleged "suspicious" transactions reported to police was the cash purchase of one apartment in the Metropolis for $500,000 - one of five titles bought on the 35th floor and combined into one giant penthouse - outlined in Mr Kay's affidavit.

Ms You received $2.3 million in a bank account from a foreign exchange dealer, which she withdrew in two bank cheques of $1.8 million and $500,000.

Those cheques were deposited in Sky City accounts, but 30 minutes later she withdrew $300,000 and Mr Yan then "cashed out" $200,000 worth of chips. The cash was given to the real estate agent inside the casino.

"Given the timing of these transactions it appears Mr Yan used Ms You's accounts to receive, then filter through Sky City, substantial cash funds for the purchase of Apartment 3505," alleged Mr Kay.

You’ve got to wonder why the National party is such champions of Sky City then? If the venue is being used to launder money and distribute drugs then it really shouldn’t have received a back-room deal to ensure more gamblers are addicted to 470 new gambling machines. In fact the Police should have shut down Auckland’s Sky City, just like they would do to any other drug dealing or money laundering premises.

It looks to me like the Police and the court system have been bribed so that Yan retained his possessions and received a sentence that isn’t really a sentence at all. I mean five months home detention in a luxury apartment purchased with dirty money. He can leave whenever he wants so it’s not really even home detention FFS!

It’s a clear indication that our political and justice systems can be purchased and there is one law for the rich and another for the rest of us.

Sensible Sentencing Illegally Parked

Apparently the Sensible Sentencing Trust is above the law:

The State of New Zealand Politics

It’s been a while since I last blogged and a lot has changed since then. For instance, the former Prime Minister John Key has resigned under dubious circumstances. At the time our biased mainstream media seemed more concerned with singing Key’s praises than uncovering the real reason behind the creeps exit stage right.

Perhaps his and Hekia Parata’s resignations were coincidence or perhaps the reason behind the former PM jumping overboard was much more insidious? People have speculated about Key’s not so blind trust, tax havens and New Zealand’s involvement in the killing of innocent civilians in an Afghan village that may or may not exist. The retarded right wing propagandists think that if the village was somehow incorrectly named, then the attack magically didn’t occur. What a pack of morons!

The NZSAS involved in war crimes? Surely not says the current right wing government and no independent investigation will be launched because it might upset the soldier’s families. Who cares about the families of those murdered and international law anyway?

So while Key continues to direct New Zealand’s fire sale from the shadows, Bill English hasn’t filled the void left behind in our political headlines. You’ve got to wonder if National learnt anything from their previous 2002 trouncing, which was their worst electoral defeat ever.

Unfortunately it is pretty much business as usual with the dead fish at the helm of National. The farmers party is still ensuring our waterways are being polluted, failing to address the housing crisis and building lots of jail cells while slashing funding for social services to ensure a good supply of inmates.

While we’re on the subject of incarceration…WTF was Labour thinking by proposing segregated jails and then quickly backtracking? It’s almost as if they want to preserve New Zealand's feudalism where life is cheap and even cheaper for indigenous people. I wonder which politicians have investments in Serco?

Despite the bean counter Bill English looking rather inept, I doubt it will be a cakewalk into the halls of power for Labour. Just like his predecessors it seems Andrew Little is failing to resonate with potential voters mainly because of biased or a complete lack of any proper reporting. Due to this and the fact that National are a pack of clowns, I’m predicting the lowest voter turnout ever. I really don’t see how a lighter shade of Green and a Maori/Mana party alliance is going to rally the troops.

Speaking of clowns, what about that Donald Trump eh? Is there a politician more deserving of The Jackals coveted Asshole Award? Of course much of what Trump does is simply grandstanding to get attention. Watch out for the US economy tanking while they pursue an isolationist agenda and try to sustain numerous economic and conventional wars around the world. Make the USA great again like it was in 1929.

I must say that Eminem vs. the National Party and Colon Craig suing the conceited Cameron Slater for defamation is providing some light relief. Pretty cut and dry cases if you ask me but don’t tell that to the court system, which is apparently in a bit of a shambles at the moment.
